Research and teaching conducted at the Department of Physics spans from basic science topics in condensed matter physics, nuclear, particle and astroparticle physics to applied areas such as medical imaging, nuclear engineering and nuclear power safety.

Background

We are looking for a technician to the department laboratories. The work will be carried out both at the division of Nuclear engineering and KTH Space Center.

Nuclear engineering

The division of Nuclear engineering conducts research on and develops future generation nuclear technology and also work with many questions regarding today’s reactors. The experimental work is currently focusing on supercritical reactors, lead cooled systems and the development of advanced fuel. Two important parts of the infrastructure are a high-pressure, heated water loop and the nuclear fuel manufacturing laboratory. As a technician you will work with both these infrastructures as well as develop, install and operate new experiments.

KTH Space Center

The centre was formed in 2014 to coordinate and promote space research conducted at the different schools at KTH. As part of the work a Space Technology Laboratory is now being established, where researchers and space industry can perform necessary tests before satellites are launched. The largest part of the Space Technology Laboratory is a thermal vacuum chamber that will be used to perform thermal cycling in vacuum. As a technician you will maintain this vacuum chamber and the cleanroom where it is situated.

The position is a permanent position, starting with a probationary period of up to 6 months.

Job description

As a technician you will

  • Prepare tests in experimental facilities.
  • Repair, maintain and calibrate pressurised systems.
  • Perform engineering work in the workshop
  • Establish and update routines for working with the thermal vacuum chamber. This includes establishing routines for working in the cleanroom and to train researchers, industry and students that will use the facility.
  • Receive bookings and schedule tests

Since some tests will continue over several days some call-in work on evenings and weekends can occur.

Qualifications

The applicants to this position must have the following qualifications:

Experience of:

  • Engineering work in a workshop
  • Pressurised systems
  • Electrical systems
  • Drawings (reading and understanding of)
  • Working with computers

Including:

  • Be able to speak Swedish
  • Be able to speak, read and write in English

In addition, it is considered as a merit if the applicants have experience in:

  • Welding
  • Measurement and control systems

Personal skills

The personal qualities are important and we are looking for a practical, thorough and structural person for this position. Since you will work with high and low pressure system as well as high and low temperatures you need to have a security awareness. Since you will work close to both researchers and industry partners you also need to be good at collaborating.Great emphasis will be placed on personal competence and suitability.
