Project description
Third-cycle subject: Engineering Mechanics
The aim of this project is to enable better plastic recycling processes and reduce the environmental impact of plastics. To that end, we will forge new detailed understanding of the transport of plastic wastes in a fluid and provide knowledge for designing innovative hydraulic separation devices. All current separation processes present drawbacks related to cost, performance and environmental hazards. Here, we suggest the use of carefully designed flow patterns developing within the apparatus to exploit the difference in density, shape and size between polymers and separate two or more products. In order to optimize the design of the novel hydraulic separator, a laboratory validation of a prototype will be performed.
The proposed project is based on highly accurate simulations of multiphase flow systems and in parallel state-of-the-art experiments. We will simulate particles of complex shapes and of different densities transported in ducts of complex geometries. The candidates will contribute to develop new numerical tools and analyse theoretical models. The project is supported by the FORMAS, Swedish Research Council for Sustainable Development.
Supervision: The Doctoral student will be placed at the Department of Mechanics, School of Engineering Sciences and supervised by Professor Luca Brandt.

Doctoral students may engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.
