Project description
Third-cycle subject: Engineering materials science
During the stainless steel production route there is a control of the nitrogen content in the AOD converter. The nitrogen content increases when nitrogen is used as a process gas during the blowing. It can later be adjusted by flushing the steel melt with argon gas, or with a mixture of argon and nitrogen gas. If the correct nitrogen content is not achieved then the flushing needs to continue. In the worst cases this forces a re-heating of the steel bath since it loses too much temperature during the flushing operation. This can lead to decrease in quality in the final product.
The aim of the project is to develop methods that give the operators new possibilities to control the blowing procedure so that the wanted nitrogen content is reached. A model for the N2 partial pressure that gives the correct nitrogen content in the steel bath will be developed. With a better prediction model the above mentioned problems with extended flushing and re-heating will be avoided and the overall quality of the finished product will increase.
You will be required to work in close collaboration with other researchers from SWERIM and industry. The successful applicant must, therefore, be able to work as part of a team. The project will require a significant amount of thermodynamic modelling, data analysis and process modeling, for which the successful applicant will be responsible and so self-motivation is also important. Critical assessment of scientific literature and the data collected during the project will be vital. Creative and analytical problem solving skills are also required.
The position is for two years and leads to a Licentiate degree.
Supervision: The doctoral student will be placed at Royal Institute of Technology and be supervised by Associate Professor Mikael Ersson.
