The Division of Geoinformatics at the Department for Urban Planning and Environment is responsible for both research and education within the broad field of geographical information technology (GeoIT). Geoinformatics or GeoIT is the science and technology for collection, management, visualization, analysis and presentation of geospatial data. The research at the Geoinformatics Division at KTH is focused on methodology development and the applications of GeoIT for sustainable urban/regional planning, environmental monitoring, crime analysis, and health studies. The Geoinformatics Division is responsible for the GeoIT Profile in the Built Environment Program and for the International Masters of Science Program in Geodesy and Geoinformatics. The Division also offers GeoIT courses to other disciplines such as Urban Planning and Design, and Real Estate Economics.

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Geoinformatics

The candidate for the licentiate position is expected to participate in a research project entitled "Sentinel-1 SAR and Sentinel-2 MSI Data for Urban Change Detection with Deep Learning’ under the supervision of the project manager.

The overall objective of this research is to develop innovative and robust methods and algorithms that use multitemporal Earth observation (EO) data in general, Sentinel-1 SAR and Sentinel-2 MSI data in particular, for urbanization monitoring in support of sustainable urban development.

The tasks and responsibilities include algorithm development, image processing, classification and change detection, writing reports, scientific articles and licentiate thesis.

Eligibility

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:

  • passed a degree at advanced level,
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or
  • in any other way acquired within or outside the country acquired essentially equivalent knowledge.

Selection

In order to succeed as an doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. In the selection of the applicants, the following will be assessed:

  • ability to independently pursue his or hers work,
  • ability to collaborate with others,
  • have a professional approach and
  • analyse and work with complex issues.

Information regarding admission and employment

Only those who are or have been admitted to third-cycle studies may be employed as a doctoral student. The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year and may thereafter be extended. Doctoral students may engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.

The position requires a Master's Degree in Geomatics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or other natural sciences and engineering disciplines. The applicant must have good knowledge in image processing, pattern recognition, machine learning/deep learning and demonstrated programming skills to implement relevant Java and / or C ++ methods and techniques. Ability to design, implement and test algorithms for processing and classifying satellite images is of great importance to the employment.

Previous professional experience in developing software for developing image processing programs is a special merit.
