Project description
Third-cycle subject: Biological physics
The microscope has undergone a revolution over the past ten years, a development that has received a lot of attention and, among other things, was awarded the Nobel Prize. In cell biology there is a great interest in being able to study biological processes in the living cell with high spatial and temporal resolution. In our research group, we work with the development of both the microscopy technology and its applications in cell biology and medicine.
In order to develop new methods based on advanced light microscopy, we are now seeking a doctoral student who has a strong interest in both cell biology and advanced microscopy technology. In the doctoral project, mitochondria in cultured cells and tissue will be studied. We want to explore some basic questions about the dynamics of mitochondria in relation to the cell's energy needs, both over time and in space.
Applicants should have a basic education in biotechnology, cell biology, medicine or physics and it is an advantage to have some experience from practical work in a biological or chemical laboratory, for example from practical lab course or project work that has included eg cell culture.
Our research group is located at SciLifeLab (http://www.scilifelab.se) and consists of a mix of physicists, biologists and medical practitioners. At SciLifeLab, we also operate the national infrastructure for super-resolution microscopy.
Supervision:The doctoral student will be placed at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology and supervised by: Professor Hjalmar Brismar and associate professor Hans Blom.
