KTH Royal Institute of Technology

Project description

Third-cycle subject: engineering materials science

Proper slag control according to metallurgical requirements is an important issue for foundries producing demanding metals. Current practice relies on sampling, sample analysis and testing of the semi-finished product. This is due to the fact that human vision can hardly distinguish between liquid steel and slag of same temperature, even for experienced operators. Emissivities of steels and slags are different at same temperature in the infrared range. A system using infrared camera will be developed to provide operators the availability to visually monitor and quantify their metallurgical processes. Where the developed system will allow small and medium sized foundries to have real time quality control of the metal before casting and during other steelmaking processes.

You will be required to work in close collaboration with industry.  The project will require a significant amount of experimental work in laboratory and industry. Some programming (e.g. Android application) will be necessary for setting up the practical experiments. Basic knowledge of Java is thus beneficial. Critical assessment of scientific literature and the data collected during the project will be vital.  Creative and analytical problem solving skills are also required.

The position is for two years and leads to a Licentiate degree.
