KTH Royal Institute of Technology

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Architecture

The PhD student will be part of the Innovative Training Network 'TACK/ Communities of Tacit Knowledge: Architecture and Its Ways of Knowing' (European Framework Program Horizon 2020). The network trains young researchers in understanding the specific knowledge that architects use when designing buildings and cities. TACK gathers ten major institutions, three leading cultural architectural institutions as well as nine distinguished architectural offices. Collaboratively these partners offer an innovative PhD training program on the nature of tacit knowledge an architecture, resulting in ten parallel PhD projects.

This individual research project (Frames) develops a theoretical and historical framework for researching tacit knowledge in the field of architecture. Taking existing, yet disjointed, attempts to study the tacit dimension in architecture as a starting point the objective is to map an overview, but more to create a critical discourse on tacit knowledge in spatial practices. This individual research project will thus provide frames of thinking that open for new conceptualizations of tacit knowledge in the field of architecture and concerning its outside.
