Project description

Third-cycle subject: Physics, specialization Material and Nano Physics

Dynamic Quantum Matter

Quantum materials have stimulated a host of new ideas based on unconventional correlated, entangled, and topological orders. Correlations, entanglement, novel dynamic orders determine the properties of quantum materials and  naturally reveal themselves in the time domain. We seek a qualified PhD student to work on Dynamical Quantum Matter with particular focus on dynamic superconducting states, odd-frequency superconductivity, dynamic multiferroicity and Dirac materials. Work will be done in the context of the recently started ERC Synergy project on hidden, entangled and resonating orders (HERO)  (synergyhero.org

Bosonic Dirac and Weyl materials

Dirac matter is any material where the low-energy excitation spectrum can be described by the Dirac equation and have linear dispersion, instead of the usual quadratic dispersion. The most well-known and studied examples of Dirac matter are graphene and topological insulators (TIs) and recently discovered Weyl metals,  in which the Dirac particles are fermionic (electrons). The excitations may also be bosonic, as has been established in recent theoretical and experimental reports on magnon, plasmon, polariton and phonon Dirac excitations. We seek a PhD student to work with combined analytical and numerical tools on the properties of magnetic materials or  supeconduting Josephson junctions that would extend the class of  Dirac materials. Work will be performed as a part of a Villum center of ecxellence activity on Dirac materials ( http://villumcdm.org/) and cover the broad scope of work on Dirac Materials (diracmaterials.org).

Machine learning and data informatics

Recent growth of computational power and high demand for prediction of materials opens new pathways to search, classify and predict materials using materials informatics. This approach places the main effort on performing high-throughput computing combined with data mining and machine learning tools. Applications of this data-dr

Supervision: The doctoral student will be placed at Nordita, a Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics, which is a joint SU-KTH research institute and is supervised by: Professo Oscar Tjernberg and Professor Alexander Balatsky.
