Project description
Third-cycle subject: Engineering mechanics.
Within fluid mechanics are sprays and dropplets the core of a large number of applications, for example combustion in internal combustion engines and gas turbines, production of nanoparticles via flame spray pyrolysis and in the purification of exhaust gases. Specific to this project is understanding and controlling the evaporation of mixtures, which is a significant scientific challenge that involves the interaction of three non-linear phenomena, namely turbulence, thermochemistry and mass and heat transfer. For example, biofuels are, in fact, complex mixtures with a wide variety of physical properties. Similarly, the synthesis of nanoparticles is based on substrate spray flames dissolved in organic solvent mixtures. A final example is flue gas condensation in exhaust gases. The behavior of mixtures during evaporation or condensation of droplets is non-linear and therefore cannot be understood intuitively.
The scientific questions that we will answer are:
The project is unique in that we perform the first high performance simulations of a large number of droplets that evaporate simultaneously in a turbulent flow. It will therefore provide new insights for modeling this exciting physics.
Supervision: The doctoral student will be placed at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology and supervised by: Associate Professor Christophe Duwig.
