Job description
The goal of this project is to use Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methods for the analysis of turbulent flows around wings with different wing-tip geometries. To this end, high-order spectral methods will be employed to perform both well-resolved large-eddy simulations and direct numerical simulations, in order to assess the influence of pressure-gradient, wall curvature and three-dimensionality in the dynamics of wall-bounded turbulence. We are in particular interested in assessing the impact of wing-tip vortices on the wing drag, and on developing methods to analyze their formation mechanisms. The researcher will become part of the Linné FLOW Centre (www.flow.kth.se), where he/she will have the possibility to interact with several related projects dealing with large-scale wing simulations and corresponding experiments, and will also have access to the multi-peta scale supercomputing facilities available at KTH, in conjunction with the Swedish e-Science Research Centre (SeRC, www.e-science.se). Furthermore, the researcher will have close interaction with our on-going work within the EU Centre of Excellence Excellerat (www.excellerat.eu/) aiming at exascale simulation of industrially relevant flows, including wings and wing tips.
