Third-cycle subject: civil and architectural engineering
The Division of Soil and Rock Mechanics has a vacant doctoral (licentiate) student position. The project theme is transition zones for high-speed railway. The candidate will study various geotechnical solutions for transitions between railway embankment and stiff structures (such as bridges) to minimize settlements, degradation and other negative mechanisms during the life span of the railway by simulation (FEM/DEM) and field measurement.
The applicant has a MSc degree in geotechnical engineering, good theoretical knowledge in soil mechanics and experience of numerical calculations.
The position is intended for doctoral studies that lead to a licentiate degree, under the condition that the goals for third-cycle studies are fulfilled. The position implies a study period of two years full-time. In addition, the doctoral student is expected to contribute with teaching activities and other departmental duties by up to 20 % of full-time employment, which means that the position can be prolonged by up to 6 months.
The department intends to apply for additional funding in order to extend the project to a doctoral degree, which would imply an employment period of up to 5 years including departmental duties.

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:

The applicant should have strong academic credentials and a good command of the English language, both written and orally. Experiences from civil engineering projects, numerical calcuations and field measurements are valuable.
After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities and personal suitability.

Information regarding admission and employment
Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years ' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
