KTH Royal Institute of Technology, School of Engineering Sciences

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Engineering Mechanics

Within the Biomedical flows group within the Department of Mechanics we focus on blood flow phenomena, blood clot formation and bleeding due to artificial life-supporting devices such as heart-and lung machines and  heart support pumps, but also on formation of atherosclerosis in patient related geometries.  The cross disciplinary work carried out within the group is computational and experimental and is carried out in close collaboration with clinic.

We have now the opportunity to expand our research group with one more PhD student having a background in engineering physics, applied mathematics or mechanical engineering. We seek a PhD student that is highly motivated by cross disciplinary (medical technology) work where the focus will be directed on understanding blood clot formation in artificial blood pumps. Both numerical and experimental work will be carried out.

The project's research questions are strongly anchored in the clinical application and is financed by the Swedish Research Council (VR). The project will be carried out together with supervisors and members of the research group, as well as with other researchers active both nationally and internationally.

Supervision: The doctoral student will be placed at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology and supervised by: Docent Lisa Prahl Wittberg
