Project description
Third-cycle subject: Chemistry
The development of next generation solar cells is a highly active research field with a potentially large impact for society. Understanding the working mechanisms of different types of solar cells is an important part of this research. New opportunities for this arise from a combination of X-ray spectroscopies (specifically photoelectron spectroscopy) with time-resolved measurements. Such methods can give insights into the dynamics and energetics of the photon-to-electron conversion process and into the stability of solar cell materials. In this PhD project these methods will be further developed and applied to materials of relevance for hybrid solar cells (perovskite, quantum dot, etc.). The results from this method will also be compared to results obtained with other, more established methods.
The project will involve fabrication of solar cell samples, measurements at KTH and at synchrotron radiation facilities and data analysis. The PhD student will be based in Dr. Ute Cappel's reasearch group (https://www.kth.se/profile/cappel/) at the Chemistry Department at KTH in Stockholm but regular measurement times at synchrotrons (e.g. Max IV, Lund; Bessy II, Berlin) will be an important part of the project. Work at synchrotrons will often be carried out as part of a larger experimental team. The research will be performed in collaboration with other research groups and as part of Centre for Molecular devices at KTH and Uppsala University, which will provide opportunities for collaboration, access to materials and other types of measurement.
Supervision: The doctoral student will be placed at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology and supervised by: Ute Cappel
What we offer

After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities and personal suitability.
Target degree: Doctoral degree
Information regarding admission and employment
Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years ' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
