KTH Royal Institute of Technology

The School of Engineering Sciences in Chemistry, Biotechnology and Health (CBH) is one of the five schools of KTH and a strong constellation for research and education in the broader areas of health, environment, energy and materials. The School of Engineering Sciences in Chemistry, Biotechnology and Health conducts research and education in areas that cover several global challenges. Among them are the need of sustainable energy, health and aging population, climate change, sustainable production and working life, food production and clean water.

The Applied Electrochemistry group consists of about consists of about 30 employees working with research and education. The majority of the employees are postgraduate students doing research for a PhD degree. Research at Applied Electrochemistry is directed mainly towards batteries, fuel cells and electrolytic processes. A postdoctoral researcher is now sought for a research project on the production of hydrogen by electrolysis, but with other reactions than oxygen evolution at the anode.

Job description

If for example alcohols are oxidized, instead of water, the consumption of electrical energy in the production of hydrogen may be substantially decreased. In a possible future bioeconomic society the alcohols would come from a bio-refinery and the electricity from renewable sources as sun, wind and water.

The project is a study of the possibilities to electrochemically oxidize organic comounds, in particular glycerol and alcohols from a pulp mill, to produce hydrogen efficiently at a cathode. It is mainly experimental in character and is a collaboration between researchers in the fields of electrochemistry and wood chemistry/pulp technology. The position is for two years and we would like the successful candidate to start as soon as possible.
