KTH Royal Institute of Technology, School of Engineering Sciences

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Applied and Computational Mathematics, specialization: Mathematical Statistics.
The Department of Mathematics invites applications for a PhD position in mathematics for artificial intelligence (AI), specifically the theory for learning algorithms and deep learning. The topic lies at the intersection of probability, analysis and AI, with an emphasis on probability theory. The project is funded by WASP, the candidate will be part of the WASP cluster AI/Math. Methods for machine learning, particularly deep learning, are now ubiquitous in many application areas. However, a satisfying understanding of underlying mathematical principles is lacking. The project will contribute to such an understanding and build towards a theory for learning algorithms and deep learning using tools from probability, statistical physics, PDEs and gradient flows. More broadly the aim is to investigate the role of stochastic control and stochastic analysis in AI.

Supervision: The doctoral student will be supervised by: Assoc. Prof. Pierre Nyuqist.

Eligibility
To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:

  • passed a degree at advanced level,
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or
  • in any other way acquired within or outside the country acquired essentially equivalent knowledge.
  • language requirements

The special requirements for the doctoral program are studies on the advanced level with specialization in mathematics, applied mathematics or computational mathematics.

Selection
In order to succeed as an doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work.During the selection process, candidates will be assed upon their ability to:

  • independently pursue his or her work,
  • collaborate with others,
