Project description

Third-cycle subject: Electrical Engineering (plasma physics track)

Project title: Investigation of magnetic holes in the solar wind close to Earth and other planets
The sun emits not only electromagnetic radiation, but also a stream of ionized gas, a plasma, the so-called solar wind. The solar wind interacts with the space environment of the planets in the solar system, and e.g. creates the northern lights at Earth. The solar wind also carries a magnetic field. At times there are deep minima in this magnetic field, magnetic holes, that can strongly effect the properties and effects of the solar wind. Knowledge of how these magnetic holes are created and how they evolve in the solar wind is incomplete. In this project, we want to study the properties of the magnetic holes and how they vary in different regions of the solar system. To do this, we will use data from several satellites and space probes, orbiting both Earth and other planets, e.g. Magnetospheric Multiscal Mission, Cluster, MESSENGER, Cassini and Solar Orbiter. On most of these spacecraft the Division of Space and Plasma Physics at KTH has taken part in developing the scientific instruments.

Scientists and doctoral students at of Space and Plasma Physics play an active role in a large number of international space projects, where we build instruments, plan operations, and analyze data. We also do science within basic plasma physics, and subjects relevant to fusion research and industrial plasma physics applications.

Supervision: The doctoral student will be placed at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology and supervised by: Professor Tomas Karlsson
