Project description
Third-cycle subject: Engineering mechanics
Within the experimental PhD-project we will study the aerodynamics of wind farms and how that can be modified by means of turbine-control techniques such as curtailment and steering. The objective is to develop a controller that operates with the turbines to increase the overall power production of the farm. The PhD project will aim at developing new control strategies for future large wind farms able to extract energy from the wind more efficiently.
The PhD student will perform experiments in the wind tunnels at KTH and at the University of Gävle. The measurement techniques that will be employed are hot-wire anemometry and advanced optical techniques to measure velocities in both time and space. The student is expected to develop the wind-turbine models and to design the electronical components to control them, using all competences that already exist within the research group at KTH. Moreover, the PhD student is expected to write scientific articles based on acquired data, which constitute an important part of the PhD program. Programming work in both Python and LabView is planned.
Supervision: The doctoral student will be supervised by: Dr. Antonio Segalini and Prof. Jens Fransson
