Third-cycle subject: Energy and Environmental Systems
Industries often generate excess heat and cold, which has previously been referred to as e.g. "waste" heat. Driven by the work on transformation of energy systems towards sustainability, the EU has identified effective recovery and utilization of such heat as a priority. Since 2019, KTH-Energy Systems participates in the Horizon 2020 project EMB3RS, which aims to develop a platform for matching the supply of residual energy with external heating / cooling demands. For this work, seven case studies will be conducted to answer the questions like: How should the systems be organized and built to effectively match supply and demand? To what extent do we achieve, via the use of residual energy, lower energy costs, reduced environmental impact and increased competitiveness? Which business models are best suited for utilizing residual energy?
We are now looking for a doctoral student who will deal with a sub-topic within the project – the design of district heating / cooling distribution networks that, at the minimum cost maximizes the amount of residual heat recovered that is then distributed to external demands, eg the built environment. The research questions, and activities, will partly provide new knowledge about techno-economically optimal ways of maximizing the utilization of residual heat, and partly develop effective methods for designing smart thermal networks via linear optimization. Modeling is primarily done within the framework OSeMOSYS, with the programming language Python. Additional methodological contribution is expected through project partners jointly developing effective scripts to link these models with models from other frameworks.

To be eligble for this position, you must hold a MSc degree within a relevant field (e.g. Energy Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering) and also be fluent in English (speech and writing). In addition, documented experience in the Python programming language is a requirement.

Information regarding admission and employment
Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years ' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
