Project description
Third-cycle subject: Electrical Engineering
The research project for the present PhD position is focused on the understanding and the prediction of the pedestal of a fusion plasma. The goal of fusion research is to construct a large-scale fusion power plant. There are still significant issues to be resolved on the way to a commercial reactor. A key topic is pedestal physics. The present theoretical models fail to describe the pedestal structure at high gas fueling rate and high power. The project has three main purposes. (1) to describe the pedestal structure in JET, via experimental data analysis. (2) to investigate the reason why the present models fail to reproduce the experimental JET pedestal. (3) to extend the models to achieve a more reliable pedestal prediction.
The work will involve both experimental data analysis and numerical modelling. Excellent skills in programming is necessary.
The project has an international background and the student will have close cooperation with partner institutions from many countries, especially within Europe. The student will carry out a part of his/her research activity abroad.
