Project description
Third-cycle subject:Electrical Engineering
Main scope of project is related to power transformers, also targeting overhead lines/cables. Pre-studies show that many wind farm transformers are oversized with regards to capacity and lifetime compared to the wind farm itself, resulting in too high CAPEX, and more expensive wind power. Dynamic rating can improve this for new wind farm projects, by real-time monitoring of capacity. Wind farms are almost unique in that their load coincides with component cooling. While the benefit is clear, the development of a new paradigm is a challenge, requiring more information on wind farm planning and wind resource data. This interdisciplinary project combines knowledge from 5 different research fields: electrical engineering, reliability, mechanics, weather prediction and heat transfer.
Your tasks as PhD student will be to:
Main supervisor: Patrik Hilber Co-supervision: Tor Laneryd (ABB AB) on power transformers, Stefan Ivanell (UU) on weather forecasting, Habib Sabbagh (Vattenfall Wind) on wind farm planning, Kateryna Morozovska on dynamic rating
