Third-cycle subject: Computer Science
KTH Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) announces a Ph.D. position in the area of machine learning for underwater robot perception at the department of Robotics, Perception, and Learning (RPL) https://www.kth.se/rpl/. This position is funded by SSF through the Swedish Maritime Robotics Centre (SMaRC). More information on SMaRC can be found here: http://smarc.se/
The research position is a 48 month time-limited position that will be extended up to a year dependant on the inclusion of a maximum of 20% departmental duties, usually teaching. In order to be employed, you must apply and be accepted as a doctoral student at KTH. The starting date is open for discussion, though ideally, we would like the successful candidate to start as soon as possible.
AUV Perception and Navigation: The student will join the team working in the Swedish Marine Robotics Centre, SMaRC. The specific goal is to use machine learning on sonar data to build representations of the seafloor that will allow recognition and alignment using sonar. These will be integrated into both localization and SLAM implementations on the SMaRC platforms.
Supervision: The doctoral student will be supervised by Associate Professor John Folkesson

Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years ' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
