At the Division of Philosophy, research is conducted in moral philosophy, science theory, risk philosophy, logic, language philosophy and decision theory. Part of the research is theoretical, but a large part of the research has a clear connection with relevant philosophical issues for society. The department provides courses in philosophy of science, ethics for engineers, philosophy of risk, decision theory and the philosophy of mathematics.
We are looking for a postdoc who will work in the project Towards a Methodology of Modal Modeling. The position is a temporary employment for one year from the start date.
Job description
The project investigates how scientists employ modeling in order to justify possibility claims, analyses these practices with concepts from philosophy of science and modal epistemology, and seeks to develop methodological recommendations for these modeling practices. This involves working with team members in Vienna and Stirling as well as with partner scientists from synthetic biology, climate science and the computational social sciences.
You will contribute to scientific publications as well as to new grant applications. Your work will include in-depth case studies, philosophical analysis, organization of research activities and dissemination of project results through conference participation and peer-reviewed publications.

Qualifications
You have a PhD in philosophy of science or a related field, with a research focus on some aspect of scientific modeling. The doctoral degree, or an equivalent foreign degree, must be obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline.
The role requires that you master English fluently. A good understanding of climate science modeling is desirable. We expect you to engage in co-authored publications and that you actively participate in the research activities of the division. You are motivated and structured, have good ability to take your own initiative and to start new tasks. You are communicative and easily cooperate with others, also across disciplinary boundaries.
Great emphasis will be placed on personal competence and suitability.
