School of Engineering Sciences in Chemistry, Biotechnology & Health

Job description

The position will be placed at the Hamedi lab department of Fibre and Polymer Technology. Hamedi lab focuses on combining electroactive materials and biopolymers to develop new tools and devices that can have an impact on the areas of energy and health.

As batteries are becoming integrated in every aspect of the modern life, we will need to address many challenges: i) Increase battery speed and energy density. ii) Engineer electrodes that can charge/discharge thousands of times. iii) Eliminate rare earth materials and use earth abundant materials. iv) Find manufacturing methods that are green, scalable while at the same time allowing nano architectures.

This project will address these four challenges using molecular self-assembly from water to fabricate new types of batteries, where the electrodes comprise thousands of layered structures of two-dimensional materials (2D heterostructures). The entire surface of 2D materials is active, so fast surface diffusion of ions replaces slow bulk diffusion, and results in a much higher power density. 2D materials also allow high packing density and show excellent volumetric density and can minimize expansion and contraction of the electrode resulting in an increased battery lifetime.
