Job description

The research in the Division of Glycoscience is focused on various areas of Glycobiology, comprising fundamental research on plants and microorganisms, as well as biotechnological developments towards carbohydrate-based products. The research requires multidisciplinary approaches that are fully integrated in the Division in the form of interconnected activities in the following areas: Bioenergy, Biomaterials, Biorefinery, Food Sustainability and Disease Control.

The objective of the postdoc position are to:

  • Plan and execute research experiments in the ERA-NET PlastiSea project, which aims to develop technologies for the production of competitive bioplastic materials based on green sustainable bio-processing of brown algae;
  • Communicate and disseminate the research results with academic collaborators and industrial partners, as well as the public.

The postdoc will work within the following research areas:

  • chemical modification of polysaccharide fractions for the development of advanced biocomposite nanomaterials;
  • tailoring of the structure and properties of polysaccharide using carbohydrate active enzymes;
  • development of new materials from agricultural waste (new functionalities for packaging materials including UV protection and antioxidant activity).

The postdoc will be responsible for:

  • planning and executing research experiments;
  • analyzing experimental data and reporting research results;
  • writing scientific publications;
  • communicating with group members and collaborators;
  • assisting with in-lab supervision of master students

Qualifications

The applicant should have a solid knowledge in surface and colloidal (carbohydrate) chemistry, materials chemistry, polymer chemistry, biochemistry, and enzyme technology applied to biomaterials in general. The applicant should have a good track record of scientific production.

A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree, obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal competence and suitability.

About the employment

Time-limited employment for 1 year, with the possibility of extension for one more year.
