In this position you will work with Associate Professor Bob L. T. Sturm, Principal Investigator (PI) of the project, Music at the Frontiers of Artificial Creativity and Criticism (MUSAiC, ERC-2019-COG No. 864189). The successful candidate will help perform research on the cultural impacts of AI involvement in three music practices, with particular focus on traditional music of Ireland, England and Scandinavia: 1) listening, 2) composition and performance, and 3) analysis and criticism. The intended outcomes of this part of the project, for which the postdoctoral candidate will share responsibility with the PI, include:

  1. A survey of AI-human partnerships in these music practices, and their ethical dimensions;
  2. Ethnographies of session music cultures in Ireland, England and Scandinavia, with specific attention paid to reactions to and prescriptions for involving AI;
  3. Observation and analysis of AI-human partnerships in music creation;
  4. Experiments investigating listener bias arising from involving AI in music creation;
  5. A framework of ethical AI in the context of music creation.

These activities will also inform the research to be accomplished by the rest of the MUSAiC team. Each outcome will result in conference papers and journal articles. Some travel will be necessary. The postdoctoral candidate will also assist in organizing workshops, conferences, competitions and concerts focused on AI in music practices. The workload will be divided as follows: 80% of the time will be dedicated to research, 20% of the time for organization of the above-mentioned activities.

Qualifications

The candidate should have a strong background from at least one of these areas, or strongly related fields:     

  • (ethno)musicology      
  • anthropology     
  • science and technology studies 

The candidate must have experience in performing ethnographies, as well as quantitative and qualitative research methods. Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills are a requirement. Musicianship is not essential, but desired. The successful applicant should have an outstanding research and publication record. The successful applicant must have an awareness of diversity and equal treatment issues with a particular focus on gender equality. Very good command of English orally and in writing is required to present and publish research results. Great emphasis will be placed on personal competence and suitability.
