Project description
Third-cycle subject: Electrical Engineering
The position will be located in the power electronics research group within the school of electrical engineering and computer science at KTH. The group carries out research in several fields, notably high-power electronics for power transmission grids, and applications of wide-bandgap power semiconductors.
The ongoing electrification of commercial road vehicles makes it necessary to ensure sufficient reliability in such vehicles, while keeping cost at competitive levels. The doctoral project will investigate methods to continuously estimate the residual useful lifetime of critical components in power electronics in electrified vehicles. As input aggregated operational data collected from the vehicles will be used. Physical lifetime models, will be identified and adapted to the concerned application. For this purpose, experimental studies will be made. In particular, inverters employing SiC-based components will be considered, since these are likely to be used in the near future. Possible ways of using the lifetime data for optimizing maintenance services over time will be investigated in collaboration with the industrial partner Scania.
The project will aim to merge the latest research in the field of reliability of power electronic systems with the industrial practice in electrical drives for commercial vehicles. To ensure the indistrial relevance, two exchange periods, one at the beginning and one at the end of the project, will be scheduled, where the doctoral student will be working at the Scania premises.
We are looking for a person with good knowledge in power electronics and/or power seniconductors. Good networking skills are also very desirable here, since the student will interact with people from industry, as well as other researchers. The project will be carried out within the framework of the Swedish Electrombility Centre, which provides great opportunities for such contacts
Supervision: The doctoral student will be supervised by: Hans-Peter Nee
