Supervision: The doctoral student will be supervised by: Professor Mikael Skoglund

The Division of Information Science and Engineering is looking for a doctoral student in the following area: Information theory, with specialization in AI and machine learning.

The goal of this project is to analyze machine learning techniques by using information theoretic tools, to characterize their performance, and in this way, to explain their properties as well as to contribute to the development of information theory in general and with applications in AI and machine learning in particular. Recent examples within the area are the information bottleneck method applied to deep learning, as well as new information theoretic results that relate to generalization, information leakage and robustness. The project will mainly focus on fundamental mathematical tools and results.

This position is announced within the framework of the WASP mathematics for AI program, see for further information. The successful candidate will be associated with the WASP PhD program in mathematics for AI, together with other PhD students at KTH and other Swedish universities.

The Division of Information Science and Engineering consists of faculty members, researchers and doctoral students (ca. 55 people in total) who contribute to a high professional standard of intensive work and quality results, as well as to a friendly and open environment. The staff has a multicultural background and the working language is English.

What we offer

Eligibility
To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:

  • passed a degree at advanced level,
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or
  • in any other way acquired within or outside the country acquired essentially equivalent knowledge.

  • The applicant is expected to hold or to be about to receive an MSc degree in Mathematics/Statistics, Engineering Physics, Electrical Engineeringing or (Theoretical) Computer Science, and is furthermore expected to show an excellent academic track record.

Selection
In order to succeed as a doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. During the selection process, candidates will be assessed upon their ability to:

  • independently pursue his or her work
  • collaborate with others,
  • have a professional approach and
  • analyse and work with complex issues.

After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.

Information regarding admission and employment
Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years ' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
