Project description
Third-cycle subject: Vehicle and Maritime Engineering
In the wheel-rail contact high stresses arise and thus wear and fatigue. Optimized wheel and rail geometries can reduce stresses and increase the service life. Many attempts have been made to optimize these geometries. Almost all these studies assume new wheel and rail profiles, but it is not so relevant to only look at new profiles.
The project aims at including both the wear and fatigue processes into the mathematical optimization, which leads to numerically demanding simulations. It is therefore necessary to modify the process, balancing simplicity and accuracy. The goal is to develop optimization models and create a tool that can optimize wheel and rail profiles for a given system.
Supervision: The doctoral student will be supervised by: Assoc Prof Carlos Casanueva.
