Project description
Third-cycle subject: Energy Technology
The development of more sustainable and flexible thermal power plants is considered to be one of the most promising means to facilitate renewable electricity penetration in the short term. In EU specifically, natural gas driven combined cycle plants have undergone from being the backbone of the grid to providing most of the regulation services necessary to increase the share of fluctuating renewables like solar and wind. In order to enhance the performance of these plants from an environmental, technical and economic standpoint several paths have been identified including: hybridization with renewables and storage in co-location or virtual aggregation fashion; a “fuel-switch” to biomass-based or non-conventional fuels like ammonia and hydrogen; the integration of thermal energy storage and heat pumps within the cycles; and other power-to-X solutions.
The PhD project purpose is to develop techno-economic models and market-oriented analysis tools to evaluate the impact of the suggested paths forward on the performance on the plant, both for new to-be constructed plants, and also for retrofitting existing assets. The work will be performed in close collaboration with leading EU industrial and research actors, and is funded by the Innovation and Networks Executive Agency of the European Commission under the H2020 framework.
The doctoral student will be placed at KTH and supervised by:Prof. Björn Laumert and Dr. Rafael Guédez.
