Project description
Third-cycle subject: Information and Communication Technology.
The Department of Electronics and Embedded Systems (ELE) has during the last twenty years done research on test, modeling, and design of Network-on-Chips (NoCs). Nowadays, NoCs are natural components in many-core processor systems.
As the number of CPUs increase, the dependability of many-core systems are threatened by a higher probability of faults. NoC-based systems provides a natural way of achieving fault tolerance through Triple-modular redundancy (TMR) and run-time reconfiguration (RTR), traditional techniques to increase dependability. Further, RTR FPGAs can fix faults by selectively reconfiguring faulty partitions.
The focus of this research position is to 1) investigate methods and HW/SW tradeoffs in order to preserve acceptable levels of dependability, 2) extend our existing Healing Core-methodology to build better fault-tolerant NoC systems, and 3) study how these methods can improve Safety in applications by studying how these system behave when injecting bit-flips into the configuration memory of FPGAs during run-time.
