Project description
Third-cycle subject: Energy Technology
Concentrating solar power (CSP) plays a critical role in the de-carbonization of the electricity grid in countries with high solar irradiance. CSP plants are attractive mainly because they offer the advantage of being able to integrate large and cost-effective thermal energy storage systems, thus being capable to generate solar energy on demand. As of 2020, roughly only 6 GWe have been installed worldwide, and thus there is still a vast margin for enhancing cost-competitiveness and performance. The development of innovative thermodynamic cycles represents a promising pathway for enhancing CSP technology and advancing its implementation.
The overall aim of this PhD research project is to develop techno-economic models and market-oriented tools in the analysis of advanced CSP employing supercritical CO2 cycles. Research questions focus on quantifying component-level attributes (including materials compatibility issues) and their integration in dynamic system models. The research will be performed in close collaboration with leading EU industrial and research actors.
Supervision: The doctoral student will be supervised by:Prof. Björn Laumert (supervisor) and Dr. Rafael Guédez (co-supervisor)
