KTH Royal Institute of Technology

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Energy Technology

Thermal flow engines such as high performance aircraft engines have highly loaded components, both mechanical, thermal and aerodynamic. To protect vital parts, secondary air is used to cool components, for example to prevent hot gas ingestion into the stator-rotor cavity. This project focuses on stator-rotor cavity flow and its interaction with the main annulus flow. Experimental studies are carried out in a rotary test turbine facility at the Department of Heat and Power Technology, in this doctoral project mainly aerodynamic and heat transfer studies.

The turbomachinery cluster at the Department of Energy Technology, which this project falls under, is a well-established research group with many years of experience in both EU projects, national program research and contract research in collaboration with Swedish and international industry and academia. The research is applied and often involves some experimental rig in the department as well as in this project. Reporting is made to partner companies and further to national financial institutions.

Supervision: The doctoral student will be supervised by: Docent Jens Fridh (main supervisor) and Dr. Mauricio Gutierrez (co-supervisor)
