Research engineer in Urban Remote Sensing and Environmental Impact Analysis - Hiring in process/Finished, not possible to apply

The Department of Urban Planning and Environment consists of three divisions and is focused specifically on urban and regional studies, geoinformatics and geodesy. The area of expertise includes research on systems, models and tools for understanding, preserving, changing, managing and developing society, the land and the built environment. The ambition is to analyze the prerequisites, conditions and strategies for sustainable social development, both in national and international context.

The Division of Geoinformatics at the Department of Urban Planning and Environment is responsible for both research and education within the broad field of Geospatial Information Technology (GeoIT). The research at the Geoinformatics Division at KTH is focused on methodology development and the applications of GeoIT for sustainable urban/regional planning, environmental change monitoring, transport analysis, and health studies. The Geoinformatics Division is responsible for the GeoIT Profile in the Built Environment Program and for the International Masters of Science Program in Geodesy and Geoinformatics. The Division also offers GeoIT courses to other disciplines such as Urban Planning and Design, and Real Estate Economics.

Job description

The research engineer is expected to work on the project ‘Earth Observation for Smart Cities’, and conduct research on satellite monitoring of urbanization and analysis of environmental impact, write scientific reports, and carry out outreach activities.

The specific objectives of the project include:

• conduct urban land cover classification using Sentinel data from 2015 and 2020 in several cities
• evaluate environmental impact of the land cover changes
• monitor the indicator 11.3.1 land use efficiency for the 2030 UN Urban Sustainable Development Goal (SDG)

Qualifications

MSc in Geomatics Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or other natural science and engineering disciplines.

The following qualifications are also required:

• Experience in analysis and classification of satellite images
• Demonstrated ability to write scientific reports.
• Experience in outreach to external communities
• Good communication skills

We are looking for a highly motivated person, who is able to work independently, as well as in an international research team. Fluent in both English and Swedish would be desirable.
