Project: The overall purpose of the project is to contribute to knowledge that will accelerate sustainable energy transformations in aviation, with a focus on bio-based jet fuels and electric aircrafts. The project will be exploring the socio-technical opportunities and barriers related to these transformations. The project is intended to be an interdisciplinary collaboration between three doctoral students and their supervisors at KTH and Linköping University. The project is funded for 4 years by the Swedish Energy Agency.
The doctoral student at INDEK KTH will in this project investigate what different opportunities there are for implementing a sustainable energy transition in the aviation sector. The doctoral student is part of a research group that works with a sustainable transformation of the Swedish energy system and Swedish industry. The doctoral student is part of KTH's doctoral program "Industrial Economics and Organization" in addition to participation in the Graduate School of Energy Systems.
The doctoral student must focus her/his research on the following sub-areas:
- previous energy transitions in the aviation sector
- modeling of future energy transitions in the aviation sector, with a focus on bio-based jet fuels and electric aircrafts
- business models for energy transitions in the aviation sector
- socio-technical energy transitions in the aviation sector
The project will use qualitative research methods like interviews, case study research, as well as quantitative research methods such as energy modelling.
Supervision: The doctoral student will be placed at the Royal Institute of Technology and supervised by: Dr. Frauke Urban, Associate Professor in the Management of Sustainable Energy Systems, INDEK, ITM.

Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years ' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
