This project will involve detailed multi-scale simulation of the forebrain circuits underlying selection of action with a focus on the basal ganglia. In particular reward dependent learning will be investigated using modeling and simulations. Also software supporting such simulations are to be developed. The basal ganglia consist of striatum and several other nuclei controlling downstream motor centra and feeding back to cortex via thalamus. We now have sufficient detailed knowledge of the biological components (cellular and synaptic properties, receptor induced signalling, etc) to make a data-driven multi-scale simulation of several components in these integrated circuits. The complexity of these circuits are so complex that simulations is required tool to interpret the information from detailed biological experiments. This PhD project will be part of an ongoing effort in which the computational infrastructure is being further developed within the Human Brain Project. The candidate for the doctoral student position should have a good background in both neuroscience and simulation techniques.
Supervision: The doctoral student will be supervised by Prof Jeanette Hellgren Kotaleski
