Human movement requires complex coordination of many muscles. Redundancy in human muscular system makes it challenging to assess pathological changes in muscle mechanical properties in vivo. Nowadays, computer simulations are playing an increasingly important role to complement experiments and provide insights into both muscle function and human movement control. Most simulation studies have relied upon "generic" models, based on experimentally measured values from a limited number of adult-sized cadavers with normal musculoskeletal geometry, which largely limited the accuracy and clinical relevance of the simulation outcomes.
The aim of the proposed project is therefore to develop a personalized musculoskeletal model focusing on patient-specific muscle morphology and force-generating properties characteristics. The work will focus on tuning muscle model parameters using optimization techniques based on our previous experimental measurement (biomechanical and ultrasound imaging measurement) of subject-specific muscle morphological parameters.
