KTH, School of Architecture and Built Environment

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Civil and Architectural Engineering, with specialization on Concrete Structures

The division of Concrete Structures at KTH Civil and Architectural Engineering is in search for a doctoral student to be assigned a project on protective structures of reinforced concrete. These structures are designed to withstand impact loading from for example air blasts. Special focus will be on how various load cases may cause shear failure, flexural shear failure or flexural failure in the structural concrete elements. Dynamic response and wave propagation effects will be simulated using finite element modelling. The simulations will be compared to results from testing in laboratory and in situ, which partly will be conducted within the project.

This is a part of a national program for competence strengthening within the area of risks from explosions within dense urban areas. The research is carried out in collaboration with senior researchers and a doctoral student at Chalmers University of Technology and is supported by the Swedish Transport Administration, the Swedish Fortifications Agency and the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB). Finding practical engineering models and methods that account for different types of complex phenomena and effects from severe dynamic loading is emphazised. An objective is that the procedure for risk analysis incorporating loads from explosions will be more standardized in the future than today, thereby raising the societal security level

Supervision: The doctoral student will be supervised by: Professor Anders Ansell and Adj professor Mikael Hallgren

What we offer
