School of Engineering Sciences in Chemistry, Biotechnology and Health

Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab, https://www.scilifelab.se/) is a national center for large-scale life science research with an advanced technological infrastructure. At SciLifeLab, multidisciplinary research is carried out based on DNA sequencing, gene expression analysis, proteomics, bioinformatics, biostatistics and system biology.

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Biotechnology

The ability to study and analyze the presence of RNA / DNA molecules in tissues has taken a quantum leap in the last decade through new methodological advances. It is therefore possible today to study the presence of all, instead of individual, RNA / DNA molecules in a tissue, which very significantly increases the amount of information and the possibility of gaining knowledge, making more precise diagnoses, etc.

We have previously developed a new method that offers analysis of the amount of all RNA molecules combined with spatial information (ie microscopic view of the tissue). This adds a new dimension to the analysis which is extremely valuable as one can combine knowledge of the tissue's histology with precision from DNA sequencing.

In the current project, we will take a further step to develop the next generation of molecular and bioinformatics methods to create an atlas of organ development. With a basic understanding of these processes, the possibility to address pathogenesis increases. The focus will be on samples from the Human Developmental Cell Atlas

(https://hdca-sweden.scilifelab.se) to identify developmental biological phases using histology and molecular techniques.

We are now looking for a doctoral student for molecular technology development together with applications that will work with the above-mentioned projects. The doctoral student will work in Joakim Lundeberg's research group of about 10-15 people at SciLifeLab, which is located at Karolinska Institutet campus.

Supervision: The doctoral student will be supervised by:
Joakim Lundeberg with support from other members of the research group (www.spatialresearch.org).

What we offer

Eligibility

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:

  • passed a degree at advanced level,
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or
  • in any other way acquired within or outside the country acquired essentially equivalent knowledge.
  • Requirements for English equivalent to English B/6, read more here.

Selection

  • independently pursue his or her work
  • collaborate with others,
  • have a professional approach and
  • analyse and work with complex issues.
  • knowledge in histology and pathology
  • experience in molecular analysis of single cells (Single RNA seq)

After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities and personal suitability.

Target degree: Doctoral degree

Information regarding admission and employment

Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years ' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
