Project description
Third-cycle subject: engineering materials science
The focus of project is the empowering of future low carbon technologies with new materials and components. This objective will be achieved by setting a strong basis gathering all manufacturing conditions across the value chain. These data will be used to develop the strategies for materials selection, embedded sensors development, environmental continuous assessment, advanced modelling, data capture and main tests to be performed for material and component validation. After this, materials will be tested for high temperature performance properties. The combined effect of material and technologies will be finally tested in component like geometries and, once validated, transferred to prototype
Refractory alloys on a small scale will be manufactured and microstructure via SEM-EDX and LOM will be checked for coherency with theoretical calculations. Characterization tests of bulk materials will be carried out for microstructure analysis together with main solidification parameters such as liquidus, solidus and main phases formation temperature ranges.
You will be required to work in close collaboration with other researchers from industry and reseach institutes in Europe. The project will require a significant amount of modelling, experimental work and materials characterization. Critical assessment of scientific literature and the data collected during the project will be vital. Creative and analytical problem solving skills are also required.
Supervision: The doctoral student will be supervised by: Björn Glaser.
