Project description
In the Fluids and Surfaces research group we focus on understanding mechanisms for the transport phenomena between flowing fluids and materials.
We have an opening for a project that primarily concerns fluid mechanics but also microbiology. You will investigate the interaction between biofilms and flowing liquids using experiments and computations. The interaction between biofilms and laminar or turbulent flows is observed in both small systems (capillaries and implants) and large systems (ship's hull, inside of pipelines, turbine blades). Biofilms can resist the large fluid forces and, depending on the application, have either positive (filtering) or adverse (increasing friction losses or contamination risks for diseases) effects.
The goal of this project is to understand the physical mechanisms that govern biofilm-flow interaction. This understanding will stimulate new ways of handling biofilms in both medical (laminar flow) and industrial (turbulent flow) applications.
The project is multidisciplinary. It is expected that you can network and interact with others.

Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years ' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
