KTH Royal Institute of Technology, School of Engineering Sciences in Chemistry, Biotechnology and Health

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Fibre and Polymer Science

The Department of Fiber and Polymer Technology (FPT) at KTH is the largest academic department in Sweden in the field of natural and synthetic polymers. Research activities are largely aimed at sustainable materials.

This doctoral project is a central part of FibRe, a VINNOVA competence center consisting of academic partners (Chalmers and KTH), industry and public organizations. This specific project will be carried out at FPT at KTH in close collaboration with research partners at Chalmers and at some of the companies (Stora Enso, Tetra Pak, Nouryon and others). https://www.chalmers.se/en/ce

The aim of the project is to produce polymers that have good miscibility with different cellulose and lignocellulosic materials so that the final material can be formed by processing at elevated temperature. The materials must have a high fraction of cellulose/lignocellulose. Anyone applying for this doctoral position should have a good knowledge of polymer chemistry and organic chemistry. It is an advantage if you have knowledge of biopolymers and / or pulp / paper technology as well as experience of processing soft materials. Suitable background for this position is a master's degree in polymer chemistry, polymer technology, macromolecular materials, soft materials or equivalent. The experimental work in the project will consist of both advanced polymer synthesis, chemical and physical characterization as well as processing of bio (nano) composites and evaluation of their properties. We strive to meet the principles of green chemistry. To support the work, there is a large amount of advanced lab equipment and instruments as well as qualified colleagues.

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate who wants to be at the forefront of research and create new technology for a sustainable future based on materials from the forest.

Supervision
The doctoral student will be supervised by Eva Malmström Jonsson, Professor.
