Third-cycle subject: Architectural Technology
Since the fabrication of formwork constitutes the most labor-intensive and costly part of the construction process, the building industry have extensively adopted methods where standardized moulds are used to manufacture simplified building components under the conveyor belt principle. Therefore, with current construction techniques there is often an opposition between sustainable design and efficient construction. Concrete's unique capacity for durability in combination with strength and stiffness, makes it possible to achieve buildings with very long service life without too much maintenance. The challenges for the material today are therefore about sustainability and lifecycle design in combination in order to ensure high quality building environments that match the inherent durability of the material. Form, surface, use and adaptability are key issues to improve concrete's role as building material. As an alternative to existing casting techniques, large-scale 3D printing is an opportunity to overcome the contradiction that exists today between tailor-made design and economically viable construction. This project focuses specifically on the development of a digital workflow where local variation that presents new means of optimizing the distribution of the material to implement customized material properties to a hitherto uniform material. The overall goal of the project is to contribute to a better collaboration between design, material properties, and construction that can lead to a more sustainable use of concrete in the built environment.
