KTH Royal Institute of Technology, School of Engineering Sciences

The Centre for ECO2 Vehicle Design, at the Department of Engineering Mechanics at KTH, performs multidisciplinary research in order to enable resource efficient vehicle design in the future. Our main research focus is on the vehicle as part of the wider transport system, taking into account requirements set on all system levels. The Centre collects a broad competence within the fields of vehicle concepts, lightweight structures, sound and vibrations, vehicle aerodynamics, rail vehicle technology and road vehicle dynamics.

The Centre for ECO2 Vehicle Design is a close collaboration with the Swedish based vehicle industry and more information regarding the Centre and the partners can be found at www.eco2vehicledesign.kth.se.

Job description

With the emergence and prospect of an increasing share of electric vehicles in the road transport system, there is a need for increased knowledge and understanding on the associated noise emissions in terms of the way drivers may be affected. A further understanding of this interaction may be most beneficial to influence the design phase such that the sound characteristics may be tailored to positively impact the vehicle-user interaction influencing a driving behavior aligned with environmentally-friendly driving patterns.

The project will thus focus on the characteristics of noise emission and transmission from electric vehicles, starting with trucks (in collaboration with Scania via the Centre), with the aim to be able to promote the engineering of positively-perceived soundscapes. In this context, the applicant will work on general issues of psychophysical theory and experimental methods.

More specifically, the research involves planning and performing listening tests and managing associated hardware. Calculations of psychophysical parameters and statistical analysis of the experiments are also planned as well as publishing the results.
