Third-cycle subject: Fibre and Polymer Science
The Department of Fiber and Polymer Technology (FPT) at KTH is the largest academic department in Sweden in the field of natural and synthetic polymers. Research activities are largely aimed at sustainable materials. www.kth.se/fpt
The current project aims to investigate nanocomposites based on cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) and tailored, colloidally stable, polymeric nanoparticles (PNPs) to investigate their so-called structural-property relationship by characterizing their nanostructure and mechanical properties. The project is funded by the Swedish Research Council.
The project includes synthesizing tailored (functional) and robust small latex particles (PNPs) through controlled radical polymerization and a special method of particle production, polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA), and using these for material production, with or without cellulose nanofibrils. Anyone applying for this doctoral position should have a good knowledge of organic chemistry and documented expereience of polymer chemistry. It is an advantage if you have knowledge of biopolymers and / or pulp / paper technology as well as experience of processing soft materials. Suitable background for this position is a master's degree in organic chemistry or polymer chemistry, polymer technology, macromolecular materials, soft materials or equivalent. The work in the project will consist of both advanced polymer synthesis, chemical and physical characterization as well as processing of bio (nano) composites and evaluation of their properties. We strive to meet the principles of green chemistry. To support the work, there is a large amount of advanced lab equipment and instruments as well as qualified colleagues.
Target degree: Doctoral degree
Supervision: The doctoral student will be supervised by Professor Eva Malmström Jonsson
To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:
The applicant must have a:
Preferred qualifications
Completed courses in either polymer technology, organic chemistry or soft materials is a merit as well as experience in laboratory work.
Personal skills
In order to succeed as a doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. During the selection process, candidates will be assessed upon their ability to:
After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities and personal suitability.
Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years ' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
