Third-cycle subject: Fibre and Polymer Science
We are looking for a doctoral student interested in challenging some of the big research questions related to plastics. This includes developing and designing sustainable synthesis methods, expanding the understanding of how chemical structure effects material properties as well as how commercially practical chemical recycling methods can be achieved – all for the polyesters.
Today, over 350 million metric tons plastics are produced annually. Of these, an overwhelming amount are fossil-based and a surprisingly small amount of the plastics are reused or recycled. Of the plastics recycled, mechanical recycling is primarily utilized as chemical recycling today, in the end, often contribute with a smaller environmental gain.
In this project the goal is to develop synthesis methodologies for polyesters with predetermined chemical structures thereby reaching new and deepened knowledge related to what in the chemical structure truly determines the polymers structure-property relationships. A second goal is to apply the principles of green chemistry when viable methods for chemical recycling are developed and new or similar polymers synthesized. Thereby, the overall goal of this project is to contribute to a society where plastics have the material properties demanded and desired as well as them being recycled in a predetermined manner to building-blocks utilizable for new material synthesis.
