Third-cycle subject: Materials Science and Engineering
Treatment of Waste including Municipal Solid Waste and biomass is big challenge in order to make a sustainable society. Directly using Municipal Solid Waste which including waste plastics as fuel through for example, incineration, emits to greenhouse gas emissions, which is not sustainable. Therefore, converting these waste into a valuable energy and chemicals shall be of interesting. Pyrolysis is an efficient method for energy recovery and chemicals from these wastes. Further on, by application appropriate catalyst into the pyrolysis process, a select products can be obtained. Example pyrolysis of biomass using zeolite can obtain a lower oxygen level biooil which have a huge potential used in the existing petroleum refinery plants for the transportation application. Pyrolysis of plastics waste using selected catalysts can obtain chemicals, such as monoaromatics etc.
In this position, the work will start by screening suitable catalysts experiments for pyrolysis of waste and biomass for selective productions with aiming at transportation fuel and/or monoaromatics. Then parameters experimental study pyrolysis with selected catalysts will be performed. Finally a process for selected production from pyrolysis of biomass and waste shall be specified with energy and mass balance etc.
