KTH , School of Engineering Sciences in Chemistry, Biotechnology and Health

School of Engineering Sciences in Chemistry, Biotechnology and Health (CBH) is one of the five schools of KTH and a strong constellation for research and education in the broader areas of health, environment, energy and materials. The School of Engineering Sciences in Chemistry, Biotechnology and Health conducts research and education in areas that cover several global challenges. Among them are the need of sustainable energy, health and aging population, climate change, sustainable production and working life, food production and clean water.

Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab, http://www.scilifelab.se/) is a national center for large-scale life science research with an advanced technological infrastructure. At SciLifeLab, multidisciplinary research is carried out based on DNA sequencing, gene expression analysis, proteomics, bioinformatics, biostatistics and system biology. The goal is to enable Swedish researchers to analyze genes, transcripts and proteins in different organisms in order to map molecular mechanisms related to health and the environment. Examples of thematic research areas that are currently being processed within SciLifeLab are clinical genomics/proteomics, cancer genome and the genomics of complex diseases as well as ecological and environmental genomics.

Job description

We are offering a postdoctoral position is based in the Biomicrofluidics team within the KTH Nanobiotechnology Group at Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab). The group is focused on droplet microfluidics and automation for 3D microtissue models and high throughput screening. The project is conducted in collaboration with large pharmaceutical partner and academic precision medicine partners.

The aim of the project is to produce and characterize human 3D microtissue models at the scale needed for early drug development using a novel droplet microfluidics platform in combination with automated liquid handling and miniaturization tools. 3D microtissue models can more accurately recapitulate in vivo drug response than 2D tissue or single cells, but has not been deployable at the scale needed for high throughput screening. This project aims to develop the technologies to scale up the efficient production and handling of 3D microtissues for state-of-the-art high throughput screening workflows.

The successful candidate will perform work at the interface of tissue engineering, microfluidics and automation, including:

  • development of droplet microfluidic devices for 3D microtissue assembly
  • characterization and validation of human 3D microtissue
  • automation of microfluidic tools with broad applicability
  • development and application of analysis tools in e.g. image analysis
  • support innovation and ideation for grant proposals

What we offer

  • A position at a leading technical university that generates knowledge and skills for a sustainable future
  • Engaged and ambitious colleagues along with a creative, international and dynamic working environment
  • Works in Stockholm, in close proximity to nature
  • An interdisciplinary and applied project in close collaboration with researchers from Karolinska Institutet and an international pharmaceutical company
  • Help to relocate and be settled in Sweden and at KTH
