Third-cycle subject: Energy Technology     

Supervision: The doctoral student will be supervised by:

The candidate will work on a new project that aims to investigate what the sustainable water use of the future will look like. The project is a collaboration between KTH, the Department of Energy Technology and Chalmers University of Technology, the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering. The employment takes place at KTH Energy Technology.

The work can be divided into five main parts:

  1. Identification of a wide range of possible system solutions to reduce water and energy use
  2. Analyze system solutions from a holistic perspective to find the most interesting systems
  3. Conduct studies to identify implementation barriers
  4. System-wide analyzes to clarify the system impact and potential of the proposed solutions
  5. Validate selected system solutions in test beds, HSB Living Lab and KTH Live in Lab
  6. Report results in scientific journals.

In addition to the project, the applicant will also be involved in other activities of the department, such as being a teaching assistant.

Supervision: The doctoral student will be placed at the Royal Institute of Technology and supervised by: Jörgen Wallin, Jesper Knutsson and Joachim Claesson.

Eligibility

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:

  • passed a degree at advanced level,
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or
  • in any other way acquired within or outside the country acquired essentially equivalent knowledge.

  • In order to be a successful researcher, a genuine interest in the area of the project is necessary and to clearly and precisely being able to express yourself in English. 

Preferred qualifications

As the project is a collaboration between KTH and Chalmers University of Technology, you will periodically stay and work at Chalmers in Gothenburg. It is important that this does not constitute an obstacle for you.

Furthermore, the project is of an interdisciplinary nature, which is why it is important that you are open to both broadening and deepening your knowledge and skills. Background in one or more of the following areas is an advantage, but not necessary:

  • chemistry / chemical engineering
  • water and sewage management
  • community building
  • environmental system analysis
  • sustainable energy use
  • energy efficiency
  • energy use of buildings
  • ability to speak, read, and understand Swedish is not a requirement, but will be seen as a merit

Selection

In order to succeed as a doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. During the selection process, candidates will be assessed upon their ability to:

  • independently pursue his or her work
  • collaborate with others,
  • have a professional approach and
  • analyse and work with complex issues.

After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities and personal suitability.

Information regarding admission and employment

Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years ' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
