GUTVIBRATIONS is a multidisciplinary international consortium funded by the European Commission. The consortium consists of 7 esteemed European partners in the fields of academia (Amsterdam UMC, Technical University of Denmark, University of Leuven, KTH Royal Institute of Technology) and industry (UniQure Biopharma BV, BIOLAMINA AB and STEMCELL Technologies UK ltd.). With our team of experts in the fields of organ-on-chip technology, 3D printing, bioengineering, organoid technology, virology, immunology and cell culturing, we aim to take organ-on-chip technology to the next level in the biomedical industry. https://www.gutvibrations.org/

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Biotechnology

A doctoral position is being advertised for the recently approved EU project Gutvibrations, which aims to develop new methods for producing tissue models to be used for medical research. The main purpose of this doctoral project is to develop methods for culturing cells in a relevant 3D environment using the support of recombinant silk. Spider silk proteins have the unique ability to organize itself into a material with advantageous properties. Hedhammar's research group has developed a method that enables simple, efficient and fast integration of cells into 3D culture by the silk proteins forming a network of microfibers that are similar to the natural extracellular matrix. The group has also developed a method for producing thin and fibrous membranes that are similar to the natural basement membrane on which endothelium and epithelium grow. The silk protein used for this is functionalized with a motif from fibronectin, which promotes cell binding. The focus of this project is to use silk to create defined microenvironments to produce models of the boundary of different tissues, such as the gut and brain. These should be used to study the interaction of immune cells and viruses in tissue environments.
