Third-cycle subject: Planning and decision analysis

The PhD project will be performed within a European research school ((Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions, Innovative Training Networks https://ec.europa.eu/research/mariecurieactions/actions/research-networks_en) focusing on Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) and Rural-Urban relations. The TOD-IS-RUR consortium create a unique platform for 10 Early Stage Researchers (ESRs), at different universities, providing interdisciplinary and intersectoral training to analyze rural-urban placemaking and develop novel, context-based planning schemes for rural-urban regions.

The position is hosted by Division of Urban and Regional Studies at KTH. The particular focus will be on the tensions between visions of future developments and existing social realities in rural locations that are subject to extensive TOD schemes.

The position includes a mandatory 6-month research visit in Belgium (Antwerpen) as well as other shorter secondments in Sweden. More information regarding the research school and the position can be found in the application system (see below).

Eligibility

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:

• passed a degree at advanced level,
• completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or
• in any other way acquired within or outside the country acquired essentially equivalent knowledge.

For this position additional H2020 MSCA Mobility Rules apply:

• Applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the host organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the recruitment date.
• Applicants must be, at the date of recruitment, in the first four years from the date when obtained the degree entitling him/her to embark on a doctorate and not been awarded a doctoral degree.

Selection

In order to succeed as a doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. During the selection process, candidates will be assessed upon their ability to:

• independently pursue his or her work
• collaborate with others,
• have a professional approach and
• analyse and work with complex issues.
• Master’s degree in Urban Studies, Planning, Sociology, Geography, or equivalent, with relevant expertise in critical qualitative analysis of urban and/or transport policy-making.
• Knowledge of Swedish, Danish or Norwegian is meriting.

Information regarding admission and employment

Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years ' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
